Mayor's unofficial campaign kickoff set

Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to hold his unofficial campaign kickoff at B.B. King Blues Club and Grill in Manhattan on Feb. 15 -- and his campaign has apparently been inviting Democrats by the dozen, Newsday has learned.

The booze-and-barbecue fete is a back-to-the-future event for the billionaire Republican, who shelled out $230,000 for his 2001 election night victory party at the Times Square venue. Bloomberg is expected to address attendees, according to campaign officials, but will save his formal re-election announcement for June.

Bloomberg, who raised property taxes and has been unsuccessful in his attempt to permanently roll back the state sales tax on clothing, has accelerated his political activity in recent days. On Monday, he hosted a fund-raiser at his Upper East Side townhouse for Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes, a Democrat.
